India’s most comprehensive ICT provider and data center operator Sify Technologies Limited recently signed over 200MW of PPAs (power purchase agreements) for renewable sources (wind and solar power).

Earlier this week, the Indian data center operator announced that it had finalized the PPAs (power purchase agreements) with Vibrant Energy Holdings.

For those who don’t know, Vibrant Energy Holdings is a subsidiary of Blue Leaf Energy Asia Pte. Ltd. The Blue Leaf Energy Asia Pte. Ltd is a portfolio company of Macquarie’s Green Investment Group Ltd (GIG).

Sify’s newest hyper-scale data centers will be powered by solar and wind energy capacity totaling 231MW. From the total, 67MW solar PPA had already been signed in March 2021 and recently designated.

The Chairman of Sify Technologies, Mr. Raju Vegesna, stated that they are determined to be direct by the activity they have done over the years within the Information and Communication Technology space. With the constantly growing need for world-class data center facilities sufficing the burgeoning data-centric transformation of Indian businesses, the company believes that an investment in renewable energy sources to fuel this transformation is a social imperative.

He further said that Sify is glad to be a part of supporting a clean energy future.

Meanwhile, Vibrant Energy’s chairman, Mr. Oliver Lewis, said that their partnership with Sify Technologies would be a new milestone on Vibrant’s journey of offering green energy and tailored solutions that suffice the business’s increasing needs.

Furthermore, Vibrant Energy’s CEO, Srini Viswanathan, stated that the company is admired for tying up with Sify and joining the journey to develop sustainable data center solutions in the Indian market. Vibrant is excited to collectively work with Sify and encourage them in their mission of a 100 percent renewable energy power source.

Currently, Sify operates 10 data centers across India with a total power of about 70MW. However, Sify stated that its data centers in Mumbai would soon be powered by renewable energy sources and aim to expand renewable energy sources across all its data centers.

Talking about the PPA announcement, MP Vijay Kumar stated that being the early adopters of ESG guidelines, Sify has been continuously pushing its limits within the Data Center space. Though the shift to renewable energy will offer some significant economic benefits, it is also about proving the feasibility of adopting green energy solutions at an industrial scale.
