AWS Announces Plans to Open Second Region in Australia

Amazon Web Services has announced plans to open a second region in Australia in the second half of 2022, the latest AWS Asia Pacific Region will be consisting of three availability zones at launch. The latest AWS Asia Pacific Region will join the list of current 25 availability zones in eight AWS regions across the Asia Pacific in Australia, India, China, Japan, Korea, and Singapore.

All over the globe, AWS has 77 availability zones across the 24 geographic regions. Additionally, the company is also planning to launch 18 more further availability zones and six more further AWS regions in India, Indonesia, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, besides the new region in Australia.

AWS Australia and New Zealand managing director Adam Beavis stated that since 2012, they have worked with hundreds of thousands of clients in Australia to boost their digital transformation from startups like Canva and Atlassian to enterprises incorporating Kmart and Telstra. Public sector agencies like CSIRO and the Australia Bureau of Statistics.

He further stated that in the last decade, Amazon has invested around AU$3 billion in the Australian region. The investment includes the infrastructure cost and the local workforce of around 3000 employees.

Jeff Barr, AWS chief evangelist stated that it would offer clients additional flexibility and option. The latest region is intended for a comprehensive range of customers.

In September 2019, the AWS took a climate pledge that by 2040 they will achieve net-zero carbon output. And to achieve this goal, Amazon invested in two renewable energy projects in Australia.
