Last week, Digital Realty company Interxion announced its plans to build a data center campus in Spain.

Interxion has bought the land parcel to develop the data center campus within the region. The site location is situated in the smallest municipality of Barcelonès ‘Sant Adrià de Besòs’.

Meanwhile, the plot has the capacity to house 15MW of total installed IT power. The construction of the first data center facility named ‘BCN1’ will begin before the end of this year and is anticipated to complete in 2024.

Interxion’s Group Managing Director EMEA, Jan-Pieter Anten stated,

The Mediterranean has established itself as one of the main points of interconnectivity between Europe and the rest of the world through its highly connected network of subsea cables. This move represents a critical step forward in expanding PlatformDIGITAL coverage, further supporting our customers in deploying their critical services around the world as the need for data-driven services continues to ramp up globally.

Furthermore, Interxion Spain’s managing director Robert Assink talking about the company’s future plans stated that their proposed BCN1 data center and connectivity hub will be an addition to Spain’s position as the primary Southern Europe digital hub.

At the moment, Interxion operates three data centers within the country of ‘Spain’ and all of them situated in its capital city ‘Madrid’.

The fourth data center facility will also be developed within the capital city and will be offering 35,000 sqm of colocation space and generating 34MW of capacity.

This year, Digital Realty company Interxion has begun working on a data center facility in Brussels, Belgium, and accomplished the construction of the first facility on a new campus in Paris, France.

Besides Interxion, other companies that are developing the facilities in Barcelona are Merlin, Renta Corporación, and EdgeConneX.
