The Indian Government has banned over 54 Chinese apps. The reason for the ban is reportedly said to be due to these apps posing threat to India’s national security.
Popular battle royale game ‘Garena Free Fire’, some photo and video editing apps such as Sweet Selfie HD, Viva Video Editor, and Beauty Camera. Additionally the apps Dual Space Lite and AppLock are also included in the list of banned apps.
Here, the surprising part is the majority of the apps in the list are the rebranded version of the apps that the Indian government banned back in 2020 and 2021. This means most of the apps got renamed with minimal changes or with no change.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology or MeitY has cited section 69A of the IT Act, 2000, to ban the apps. The aforementioned section allows the Indian Government to impose a ban on the apps if they jeopardize the country’s sovereignty and integrity.
