A web browser is important to perform these tasks, from downloading media files from the internet to surfing websites on the web. Currently, there are a plethora of browsers available on the internet with enhanced privacy and security.
According to Atlas VPN’s April 2022 report, Safari has surpassed 1 billion users and is currently the second most popular web browser, while Google Chrome holds first position with more than 3.3 billion users.
The popularity of the iPhone and Mac helps Safari in achieving this huge milestone. Moreover, Apple’s Safari browser is designed to offer a myriad of privacy features like cross-site blocking and script blocking and provides detailed reports about the cross sites that were blocked from accessing your personal information.
Furthermore, the report also states that Microsoft Edge has surpassed 200 million users to become the third most popular browser overtaking Firefox. Microsoft Edge gained popularity after Microsoft rolled out Windows 11 and made it difficult to change the default browser.
Firefox, with 179 million users currently, stands in the fourth position. Mozilla Firefox offers security features like pop-up blocking and security against malware and phishing.
While threat actors are increasingly using social engineering methods to trick users into downloading malware, users can secure themselves by doing the following steps:
- Keep your browser up to date
- Block pop-ups
- Make sure the websites you surf are using SSL certificates (Avoid non-HTTP sites)
